ABOUT THE ARTIST

CRAIG RUDHOLM

I have been printing fish for about ten years. I was introduced to the process by Bill Twibill, a master printer from California, and given further guidance by Eric Hochberg and Hideo Yamamoto at the Santa Barbara Museum of Art. My first attempts looked like footballs but I kept practicing, and my technique improved over time. Prior to being introduced to fish printing my artistic tendencies were expressed in the garden, in the kitchen and in the special education classrooms I have taught in. Other than a semester city college class covering the basics of design, composition and color theory and several weekend seminars about nature printing I am self taught.

Fishing is a wonderful activity. However, the majority of the fish I have printed have been purchased at piers or speared by my friend Matt Lum. Life has been busy, and art is time consuming. At the heart of it I am probably an abstract impressionist of some sort. I enjoy using Japanese papers, water and oil based mediums, and different water based glues to collage canvases that the fish prints get mounted in. I strive to use these materials to effectively present the fish and, if possible, more. And I hope to always push technique to express, if possible, more.

When I look at oceans, rivers, lakes, ponds I see vast mysterious places with creatures that move like poetry and flash about like thoughts coming and going. I am sure there are vast connections, inner connections, between people and bodies of water, and I want to show them.
